La demande lui avait été adressée en mai dernier par Jean Ping, le président de la commission de l’Union Africaine. Il s’agira pour Youssou N’dour de mobiliser un soutien populaire pour la mise en œuvre du programme établi à cet effet. Il va également collaborer avec l'UA à l'organisation d'une journée sans violence le 21 septembre prochain. Cette date a été choisie par l’organisation comme journée de la Paix afin de faciliter la réalisation d'actions humanitaires.

Par ailleurs, Youssou N’dour participera à des manifestations et à des activités de l'UA relatives à la paix et à la sécurité au niveau national, régional et international, l’objectif majeur étant de sensibiliser les populations et les exhorter à contribuer à l'année de la paix et de la sécurité. Pour ce faire, l’union africaine compte également procéder par la diffusion de messages à travers divers canaux publics, notamment dans les médias.

Pour rappel, l’année 2010 avait été déclarée année de la paix en Afrique par les chefs d’Etat et du gouvernement de l’UA, à l’occasion de la session spéciale sur l'examen et le règlement des conflits en Afrique, tenue à Tripoli en Libye le 31 août 2009. Par cette journée, l'UA compte promouvoir la participation active de tous les acteurs concernés et veut travailler sur la base de partenariats (communauté économique et régionale, société civile, secteur privé et communauté internationale) et le leadership africain dans la quête de la paix et de la sécurité en encourageant les africains à œuvrer dans ce sens pour rapprocher les populations.
